What Size Dumpster Do I Need for My Project?

Roll-off dumpsters typically come in a range of sizes, from small 10 yard bins up to 40 yard containers for major demolition jobs. Here's roughly how projects map to sizes — and why the 20 yard container is the one most homeowners and contractors end up needing.

Smaller cleanouts (10–15 yards)

Garage cleanouts, small bathroom remodels, single-room decluttering, and light yard debris usually fit in the smaller size range. If your project is contained to one room or a weekend cleanup, you likely don't need anything bigger.

Most home and contractor projects (20 yards)

A 20 yard container is the size most rentals settle on, and for good reason — it holds roughly 8 pickup truck loads, which covers:

• Whole-home cleanouts
• Kitchen or bathroom remodels
• Roofing tear-offs (asphalt shingles)
• Flooring or carpet removal
• Mid-size construction and renovation debris

If you're unsure, it's usually cheaper to slightly oversize than to run out of room and need a second container mid-project — a second delivery and pickup costs more than the difference between sizes would have.
